CCAG to host book launch and ArtTalk for P.E.I.’s Lionel Stevenson

May 14, 2013

Exhibiting photographer to launch book and give talk Sunday, May 19   (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) – Accomplished photographer and master printer, Lionel F. Stevenson will present an ArtTalk and book launch at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. The book is a publication reflecting Stevenson’s current exhibit, Fifty Years of Photographs (1962-2012), which is concluding its eight-month showing in the Art Gallery. This is a co-publication between the Gallery and Charlottetown’s Acorn Press, with text by Pan Wendt, gallery curator.  “It has been great for the Gallery to be involved in a retrospective of one of PEI’s most important artists, says Wendt. “We are also really happy to create a legacy for this show in the form of a book that celebrates Lionel’s career,” This is Stevenson’s second ArtTalk at the Gallery in recent months. In November, the New Glasgow, P.E.I.-born artist spoke on some of his greatest influences: Eugène Atget, an early 20th century documenter of Paris, and Berenice Abbott, a renowned American photographer prominent in the 1920’s and 30’s. This talk will focus on Stevenson’s own practice, and his exhibit -- a career survey focusing on selected thematic groupings and series, including large-scale studies of Peggy's Cove erratics, Canadian streets and landscapes, and documentary commissions on Island elders and historic barn architecture. All are welcome to attend this free event. For more information, please visit The Art Gallery is now on summer hours and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 pm.
