Colours and textures key to Damien Worth exhibition

October 4, 2011

Island artist Damien Worth is mounting his debut exhibition at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery this month.

Worth recently completed his B.F.A. at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax.

"I saw Damien's thesis show at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax this past winter, and I was very impressed. Damien has grown immensely as an artist during his time at NSCAD, and his exhibition - called Meditations in an Emergency - was a cut above what you normally encounter in student work," says curator Pan Wendt.

Worth is an artist who works in several mediums but who really enjoys the rich colours and textures available in paint. This exhibition will focus on his recent practice as a painter. His semi-abstract work, which he describes as "Landscapes in Crisis," achieves a balance between materiality and fantasy, sensual pleasure and apocalyptic nightmare. Worth is engaged with the history of painting, but he is also involved in both an immediate and immersive process.

As part of his interest in immersing himself in his work, and his exploration of fantastic landscapes, Damien has recently delved into interactive digital technology, specifically gaming software. The exhibition will feature a projected element that allows viewers to engage with Damien's recent forays into virtual landscapes derived from his layered paintings.

Damien Worth - Painted Space is in the Entrance Gallery October 8 to December 23. It is curated by Pan Wendt and is part of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery's Emerging Artist Series supported by the RBC Foundation.
