Mask making with Jamie Shannon

August 5, 2011

Jamie Shannon is a Toronto artist specializing in bringing things to life. This award winning puppeteer, creator and producer is back as artist in residence at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery this month.

For the week of August 15 to 19 Jamie will be leading Beast Camp, a specialized puppet camp for youth ages 9 and up, that will combine the staff and resources of both the Visual and Performing Arts camps at the Confederation Centre.

This promises to be a mind-blowing week of monsters, flying puppets, raven masks and performance. Children will explore the eternal struggle between good and evil through art, movement, voice and performance, culminating in a final performance on August 19 at 3 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheatre.

The magic continues the following week when Shannon prepares to lead an all-ages public procession of crows, ravens and flying creatures through Charlottetown as part of the Art in the Open Festival happening Saturday, August 27.

There will be a free mask making and procession planning workshop in the Schurman Family Studio, on Wednesday, August 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. This is a chance for the young and young at heart to delve into the world of puppeteering and get involved in Shannon's extraordinary procession.

To register your child for puppet camp please contact Tamara Gough at (902) 628-6111 or To find out more about Shannon's procession project or to pre-register for the mask making workshop, please email Betty-Jo McCarville at
