Textile art exhibit will grow at the Centre this summer

June 6, 2011

Taking textile art to new heights, the Confederation Centre Art Gallery is presenting a very organic and one of a kind show this summer. The artist will spend four days under the public's watchful eye as she creates her work for the exhibition Candice Tarnowski - A Bed's Been Made Up For You.

Candice Tarnowski is a Montreal-based artist who frequently uses textiles as material for her work. She has been invited by the Confederation Centre Art Gallery to create five pieces for the concourse display cases, which are seen by thousands of visitors over the course of the summer.

Several of the cases will include the artist's drawings and other two dimensional work, but others will feature her signature strategy of layering blankets to form visually-striking stacks that resemble landscapes or geological strata.

Tarnowski, whose process of installation is extremely time-consuming, will be making these pieces the week of June 14 to 17, a process the public will be able to watch progress. Tarnowski hopes to make use of some blankets from P.E.I., in order to make a material connection to the community here. MacAusland's Woolen Mills, whose blankets the artist knows and loves, has offered to lend her some samples.

Thursday evening, June 16 at 7:00 p.m., the artist will take a break from her work and give a public talk in the concourse about her process and the meaning of her pieces.

Candice Tarnowski - A Bed's Been Made Up For You runs June 18 to September 25 and is curated by Pan Wendt.
