Guidelines for the Colonel Chris Hadfield Essay Contest

Introduction:
The Out of This World with Colonel Chris Hadfield Keynote Lecture invites Island students ages 9 to 15 to submit a written essay or video.
Col. Chris Hadfield will spend the day at the Centre, taking part in several events. At 1 p.m. Col. Hadfield will present a keynote address in the Homburg Theatre followed by a Q&A session. An evening VIP reception will allow for a more personal interaction with this Canadian space-age celebrity.
Some contest entrants will be invited to an exclusive meet and greet sponsored by Purity Dairy, with Col. Hadfield at The Mack on October 30, 2014 at 11 a.m. where winners will be announced.

Topic:
The topic of the student submissions is ‘How has Colonel Hadfield inspired your pride and sense of being Canadian?'
Through his 21 years as an astronaut and three spaceflights, the Ontario native has become a world-wide sensation, using the power of social media to make outer space accessible to millions, and infusing a sense of wonder into our lives not felt since man first walked on the Moon. Called "the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong," Hadfield continues to bring the marvels of science and space travel to everyone he encounters.
Students may use reference materials such as Col. Hadfield's book An Astronauts Guide to Life as well as his Twitter feed @cmdr_hadfield, and other sources chosen by the essay writer.

Prizes:
Students will be grouped in age categories; age 9 to 12 and age 13 to 15. Each category will have one grand prize winner who will receive admission to a six day space camp at the Cosmodome in Laval, Quebec, including air fare. Thank you to the Cosmodome for providing the prizes.
